San Antonio, TX May 30, 2003
I got to San Antonio on Thursday (the day before the concert). After going round and round downtown San Antonio for the better part of 30 min, I finally found the hotel. I met up with Leesha, whom I'd never met before, and we went in search of food. After an uneventful walk and lunch on the Riverwalk, except for the waiter that wanted to put on his Chippendale's clothes and be our entertainment for the evening, we went back to the hotel. We saw several of the band's crew milling around the hotel. Most were getting money out of the ATM. We decided there must be a poker game going on and they were losing! LOL We spent our evening in the bar dodging the question "Are you with Val Pac?" from the hundreds (seemed like it anyway) of people there for a Val Pac convention. We went for a cab ride around SA that night and got stuck in traffic because the Spurs won the conference finals that night. There were literally hundreds of cars in the streets with people honking their horns and waving banners as they hung out their car windows! Leesha left her cell phone in the cab and as she waited outside of the hotel for the cab driver to come back with it Joe walked in! They just looked at each other then looked towards the street to watch the mayhem taking place! I was in the bar waiting for Leesha and had no clue Joe was in the lobby! Sheesh!
On Friday we waited in the lobby, but after what seemed like forever, we only saw the busses leave the hotel! They never came through the lobby, so we're not sure how they snuck out! Those sneaky Leps! We met Vy, who was our other roommate, late Friday afternoon. She went to the room to catch some zzzz's and we went on to the arena. We got there in time to hear Ricky Warwick do two songs during soundcheck! There was a Harley Davison giveaway at the show so the doors opened early (about 530pm) to let the key winners in. No cameras once again! I swear these arenas and their camera Nazi's! We grabbed some water and took our seats. We were second row on Sav's side!
We saw Ricky, right before his set started, standing behind some speakers so Leesha and I waved to him. He looked shocked, but waved back! We had been talking to 3 guys in the front row about various Lep experiences and they seemed real nice. We asked them to cheer for Ricky and stand up when he came out and they were nice enough to agree. When Ricky came onstage, we all stood up and whooped and hollered! Ricky smiled, but turned red! Poor thing! We embarassed him! He put on a great show with his funny jokes and we all cheered for him! He just turned various shades of red for the better part of 30 min! We gave him a standing ovation as he left which made him blush again, but at least he was smiling!
The Leps hit the stage at about 830ish. They did their High N Dry set, starting off with Let It Go. They were in top form and didn't seem to be having any sound problems, which seems to have plagued them on this tour. Joe gave it his all, though you could tell he was guarding his right shoulder. He kept ahold of his right pant leg as a way of reminding himself not to swing that right arm. He winked over in my direction, but I'm not sure who he was winking at. Actually, he did that twice. Viv recognized Leesha from a previous meeting and waved at her. That was kinda cool! Sav kept drooling over some chick next to me who had the moves of a pole dancer. That was kind of funny! I wanted to go "Here's a drool bib hon!" Since the doors and beer stands had opened early, there were a lot of drunk people at this show! One very BIG guy jumped up onstage and got Joe from behind and tried to grab his mic. He said something ("I love ya man!" from what I've heard from others) just as security (or maybe the roadies) grabbed him and hauled him off stage! Joe was a real trooper and never missed a beat! He just kept right on singing! All I could think was "OMG! Joe's shoulder!" I'm glad he's alright! During Foolin' I saw Ricky standing behind the speakers again, so Leesha and I waved. He saw us and waved back, but again looked shocked! Viv just looked at us like, "What are they doing?" LOL There was a jumbo screen there and someone flashed the guys as she was on the screen. There were no comments by Joe on that one! Leesha made it on the screen a few times! I think the cameraman had taken a liking to her! Joe did Sweet Home Alabama during the acoustic part of the show. We helped him out by singing along. Then, of course, Joe had to comment on the Spurs winning and the mayhem that followed! That got the crowd riled! During the encore, as the band did Love Bites, a couple in the front row were practically having sex! Joe was shaking his head at them, Viv and Sav looked embarassed by it, and Leesha, Vy (who had moved next to us during the show), and I were laughing at them! I tell you, this crowd was drunk! Wasted would have been an appropriate number for this show! There was a fight for Sav's pick between two guys after the encore. The three of us were dodging chairs and limbs! It got a little scary there for a minute! All in all, it was another great show by the Leps! They couldn't have sounded (or looked) better!
